Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re new to Medicare, we recommend starting with our Beginner’s Guide to Medicare, which covers:

What is Medicare and who qualifies for it?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 and older. It also covers certain younger individuals with disabilities or end-stage renal disease. Most people become eligible at age 65.

What are the different parts of Medicare?

Medicare has four parts:

Part A: Hospital insurance

Part B: Medical insurance

Part C (Medicare Advantage): All-in-one plans offered by private insurers

Part D: Prescription drug coverage

What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement (Medigap)?

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans bundle your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits into a single plan offered by a private insurer and often include additional benefits. Medigap policies supplement Original Medicare by covering out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and coinsurance.

When should I enroll in Medicare?

Generally, you should enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period, which starts three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after. Delaying enrollment could result in penalties.

Do I need Medicare if I’m still working at 65?

It depends. If you have employer-provided insurance, you may be able to delay enrolling in Medicare Part B without penalty. However, it's important to compare costs and coverage to determine what’s best for you.

Does Medicare cover everything?

No. Original Medicare does not typically cover long-term care, dental, vision, hearing aids, or routine foot care. You may need additional insurance or savings to cover these services.
